About Lizzie Pook

Hello! Welcome to my website, thanks for taking a look around.

I am a London-based writer, editor and award-winning journalist. As a busy freelancer I write travel and features content for national magazines, newspapers, websites and books, including the Guardian, The Telegraph, The Evening Standard, The Independent, Condé Nast Traveller, Women's Health, Rough Guides, Lonely Planet, SUITCASE, Stylist and I also consult and provide copywriting services for travel and lifestyle brands.

Prior to embarking on a freelance career, I spent four years on the features desk at the fantastic Stylist magazine, where I commissioned high-profile writers; edited some brilliant, bizarre and ground-breaking features; and wrote about everything from cognitive-enhancing drugs to conspiracy theorists.

For the sake of a good story I have proselytised with Mormons, weathered a tumultuous stay at an intensive anger management retreat, been behind the scenes at a blood-spattered abattoir and spent four days in the company of controversial topless protest group FEMEN at their squat in north Paris. I was also lucky enough to travel to Goa to ride bikes with India’s first feminist motorcycle gang, The Bikerni.

I am a wildlife fanatic (my most memorable assignments have involved tracking black rhino on foot in Kenya's remote Samburu Reserve and spotting polar bears from a tiny exploration ship on the wild east coast of Greenland) and have been lucky enough to travel around the world, hiking through national parks, floating along picturesque rivers and climbing mountains to seek out exciting travel stories for some of my favourite magazines and websites. I am forever in search of more grizzly bears and my dream wildlife experience would be snorkelling with narwhals in Arctic Canada (no biggie).

I have won a number of awards for my work. In addition to being named New Consumer Journalist of the Year at the PTC New Talent awards and being shortlisted in the Writer of the Year category at the prestigious PPA awards, I have also been shortlisted as Best Print Writer at the BSME Rising Star awards and was very pleased to be named on MHP’s 30 to Watch list. My pieces on kayaking with hippos and crocs in Botswana’s Okavango Delta and road-tripping through the centre of Oman were both shortlisted for best travel feature at the Travel Media Awards.
